Frequently Asked Questions
Do dental implants hurt?
The procedure itself is not painful, the area is fully numbed with local anesthetic and sedation is available. Mild discomfort for a few days after surgery is normal and manageable with prescribed medications. Most patients return to normal activities shortly after surgery.
Will I need bone grafting?
Not always. If your jawbone is sufficiently healthy and dense, no grafting is needed. If it has deteriorated, grafting builds up the area before implant placement. Your surgeon will determine this during your consultation using 3D imaging.
Are there diet restrictions after surgery?
Yes, temporarily. A soft or liquid diet is recommended for the first few days. By day three you can introduce soft solid foods, and within a month most patients can eat normally. Long-term, dental implants have no dietary restrictions.
What is the success rate?
The success rate is very high in the first year following surgery. Long-term studies show nearly 95%-98% success at 10 years. This success rate may be impacted by smoking and certain medical conditions (diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.).
Does insurance cover implants?
Coverage varies by plan and is expanding as insurers recognize the long-term oral health benefits. Many plans cover a portion of the implant and/or crown costs. We recommend contacting your provider directly to confirm your benefits. We can assist you in this insurance process.
How long do implants last?
With proper hygiene and care, dental implants can last a lifetime. The crown may need replacement depending on wear and maintenance
Who is not a good candidate?
Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, certain immune or blood disorders, hemophilia, active cancer treatment, or heavy smoking history may face higher complication risks. Our surgeons evaluate each case individually — many conditions can be managed to allow for successful implant placement.
