Recovery & Aftercare
Most patients feel significantly better within 3–5 days and back to normal within a week. Following your post-operative instructions closely is the most important thing you can do to ensure a smooth recovery.
What to Expect Day by Day
Day After Surgery
Some bleeding and swelling is normal. Apply ice intermittently (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to limit swelling; the more ice on day one, the less swelling on day two. Keep head elevated when icing.
Day 2
Swelling typically peaks today or on day 3. Continue to ice to reduce swelling. Soft foods are fine. Continue pain medication as needed.
Day 3
Jaw stiffness is common. Continue to ice to reduce swelling. Swelling may begin to subside. Gradually add soft/solid foods as comfort allows.
Days 4–5
Most patients feel over the hump. Energy returns. Continue to avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods. Dissolvable stitches may be gone by now and are typically starting to soften and melt.
1 Week After Surgery
Return to a normal diet as tolerated. Avoid smoking throughout recovery; it significantly increases the risk of dry socket and delays healing. Dissolvable stitches are typically gone by now.
*Continue to maintain hygiene and continue to rinse as advised.
